    Old Town of Lijiang

The legendary Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, which looks akin to a jade dragon lying in the clouds, is the indisputable national park of Lijiang. It is home to 400 different types of trees and 30 varieties of animals graze on the beautiful grassland. The fir trees, dragon spruce, Chinese wistaria, azaleas, primroses, lilies, rhododendrons, peonies and orchids lie brightly scattered on the many slopes of this mountain according to the altitude and temperature. The famous 500-year-old camellia tree known as the 'No. One Tree Under Heaven' lies at the southern foot of Jade Dragon, flanked by the Yufeng Temple built in 1756 during Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty. On the other hand, Dr Joseph Rock's mysterious tree that apparently 'shivers when you touch it', is hidden somewhere in the alpine forests. Jade Dragon is also home to the rare Wild Snow Tea, which has medicinal benefits. Towering at 5,600 meters with 13 majestic peaks, Jade Dragon is the southernmost glacier of the Northern Hemisphere. With Fan Peak as its pinnacle, this sanctuary is like an eco-zoo for the Yunnan golden monkey, alpine butterflies, lesser pandas, musk deer, Lady Amhearst's pheasants and the sacred black-necked cranes. The months of December to March are best for seasonal bird-watching at Lashi Lake. If you prefer cushioned comfort, you can take in the quiet spirit of this mountain via the cable lift to Dragon Spruce Meadow, halfway to the glacier's peak.

    Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

On the way north towards Shangri-La is the equally alluring Tiger Leaping Gorge, which lies in-between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the latter's neighbor, Haba Snow Mountain. When you look down the tremendously steep cliff from either of the mountains, the echo of the gushing rapids from the Golden Sands River is music to the ears. Soft whispers become a roaring crescendo if you wish to participate in river rafting amid this deepest gorge in the world.Buddhism continues to attract new converts worldwide, and the Baisha frescoes some 8km away from Lijiang, offer important insights into the art and heritage of Tibetan buddhist, Han buddhist and Taoist culture. Painted by 53 fresco groups in all, the murals detail a harmonious balance of color, harmony and patterns. Press on with a foray into the religious influences of the area, with a visit to the Yufeng Lamasery, one of seven monateries in Lijiang. A giant camellia tree stands in its grounds at some 3 meters, while a mind-boggling 20,000 flowers blossom on the plant each year!As the beauty of your Lijiang experience holds you in helpless thrall, venture further afield along the Jinshal River towards Baoshan secret stone village. Located 100km outside of Lijiang, everything in this disguised nook of the world is made of stone, including the ovens, beds and water vats! This remote village is sequestered on all sides by an impregnable cliff, with a small path serving as its only contact to the outside world.

    Tiger Leaping Gorge

Horizontal, vertical, sideways, facing the southeast, pointing to the west, each piece of sloping tiled rooftop in the old town of Lijiang is arched so tightly to the other, the entire collage is reminiscent of a big Chinese ink slab. This town with the gray sun-burnt rooftops was first built in the late Song Dynasty more than 800 years ago.Lift the lid off this melting pot and you'll discover a civilization as old as the wrinkled cobblestone streets covering a 3.8 kilometer strip of terrain that doesn't allow trespassing of vehicles as a rule of thumb. So come with your best pair of walking shoes to explore an ancient town devoid of traffic lights, skyscrapers and modern trappings. Instead, it is filled with an array of canals and quaint bridges that connect the streets and have earned Lijiang the famed moniker of 'City of Bridges'. You can catch glimpses of Naxi women cleaning vegetables and washing clothes alongside the canals, utilizing water that stems from the northern Black Dragon Pool at Jade Spring Park. Situated at the foot of Elephant Hill, this scenic park was built in 1737 during the Qing Dynasty. The main highlights include the Black Dragon Pool, which is a beautiful sight with a sprawling pond, the magnificent Five Phoenix Tower, and you can also find exquisite Naxi-style architecture here. There are at least 500 species of flowers blooming in the garden across the seasons, and there are interesting seasonal horticultural shows and art displays.Market Square is located in the center of the old town. Some of the wood and stone two-storey Naxi houses embellished with intricate carvings and elaborate courtyards have been converted into shops and restaurants - this is where you can find traditional arts and crafts, as well as authentic cuisine. If you are in the mood for entertainment, go to the Market Square concert hall to watch the fascinating Naxi orchestra perform classical Taoist music featuring early versions of instruments such as lutes, three-string violins and cymbals. This troupe has performed worldwide - they even had President Jiang Zemin performing on the flute with the orchestra when he visited Lijiang. In the evening when the red lanterns light up, the Naxi residents cloaked primarily in blue and white, will gather for rounds of vivacious folk dancing. With or without your dancing shoes, it is truly irresistible when the affable townfolk invite you to join in the merry-making. Another place of interest is the Shuhe Naxi Village where you can find interesting restaurants and pubs for entertainment. In search of architectural splendor? Head south and visit the Mu Mansion, a cultural and historical monument that locals tout as bearing a close resemblance to Beijing's Forbidden City albeit on a smaller scale. The Mu clan ruled Lijiang for 22 generations and the old town is renowned as China's only ancient settlement without a city wall because building a fort is tantamount to drawing a box around the Chinese character Mu , turning it into Kun - meaning 'difficulty'. This superstition still reigns today, preserving the Mu legacy in an auspicious manner. When dusk beckons, take a walk up Lion Hill for a magnificent view of the old town. Turn to the other side of the hill where the new town of Lijiang provides a stark contrast.

    Dry Sea

Another wonderful phenomenon worth exploring is the Dry Sea, located at the eastern base of Jade Dragon. What was once a highland glacial lake is now a sprawling meadow to which local shepherds bring their cattle, goats and sheep to graze. This is also the perfect spot for skiing, grass-sliding, gliding and horse-racing. Don't miss out on a visit to the First Bend of the Yangtze River, which is a geological marvel because the river first travels southeast, then makes a 180-degree V-shaped turn going up northeast again. Neither should a visit to Yunshanping, a large expanse of pasture hidden in the virgin forest on the east of Yulong Snow Mountain, be omitted. Throughout history, the grasslands were a clandestine meeting place for forbidden lovers wrenched apart by parental objections to their union. This romantic legacy has gradually dissolved however. Yunshanping now hosts folk performers from the minority groups, who serenade the most love-lorn of species. Tourists.

When you first meet the Naxi people, their flushed pink cheeks and smiling eyes bespeak a kind of purity and warmth absent in most concrete jungles. The traditional Naxi in Lijiang choose to be living examples of their unique heritage. They are descendants of Tibetan nomads and form a matriarchal society where friendship rules, marriage is not practised and women hold more power in the social order than the male of the species. Children are brought up by their maternal family, and the Naxi clan is often described as "a society without fathers or husbands."Naxi culture is a proliferation of its core religion, Dongbaism. This ancient religion is believed to have originated from the Dongba Shilo, a shaman who lived in eastern Tibet 900 years ago. Dongba religion teaches the belief in supernatural gods and incorporates influences from Lamaism, Buddhism and Taoism. Dongba mythology is also based on the faith that "Nature" and "Man" are half-brothers who share the same paternal bloodline. Precisely because the Naxi respect their environment, Lijiang's pristine beauty has been well preserved until today. At the Museum of Naxi Dongba Culture situated near Black Dragon Pool, you can see displays of more than 1,300 Dongba pictographs, which constitute the only artistic script in the 21st century that still uses hieroglyphics. The Mosuo, a sub-group of the Naxi, mostly reside in the Luoshui Village at Lugu Lake, a pristine geological location known as the "Pearl of the Plateau". At 2,700 meters above sea level, these indigenous people lead a simple, carefree existence that depends on an agricultural livelihood. They wear traditional velvet and silk costumes in ornate black, white and red hues. The Mosuo follow a matrilineal system called "walking marriages" that's akin to the Naxi's social structure, and their religious belief is based on Tibetan Buddhism. The other significant indigenous people residing in Lijiang include the Lisu, Pumi, Dai, Miao, Zhuang, Tibetan, Hui, Han, Yi, and Bai groups. Attending and participating in the people's festivals is the best way to learn about their history and culture. The Naxi celebrate the Sanduo Festival on the eighth day of the second lunar month. From the 24th to 27th day of the sixth lunar month, the Naxi, Yi and Bai light "torch towers" to commemorate their new year during the annual Torch Festival. For the rest of the year, the Mosuo worship the Gemu Goddess during the Zhuanshan Festival; the Lisu have their Kuoshi Festival; and the Lunar New Year is celebrated for the first fifteen days of the lunar calendar by the Pumi ethnic group. For rich cultural relics, you must visit the Baisha Village Frescoes at Liuli Palace, Tabaoji Palace, Dading Hall and Dajue Palace. These spiritual murals hail from the Ming and Qing dynasties and hold vital clues to the people's culture, history of the past. They demonstrate the evolutionary passage of the society's faith. In addition, traditional arts and crafts reflect a strong local flavor - Dongba carpets and the wool blankets of the Naxi have intricate patterns signifying happiness and good luck. Bronze wares such as ink slabs, brush containers and lamp covers, as well as porcelain and wooden carvings, are also popular. Before returning to the big city, you might want to go to a small shop at the Big Stone Bridge to get a "Bunong Bell" talisman as a special gift for yourself.
